ACT Group for Teens: Discovering Ways to Thrive

Change can bring us new beginnings, yet this can be hard for us to accept, especially when there is comfort in having things stay the same. The exciting part of this process is that you get to choose how and what to change in your life. This program invites you learn new ways to discover and accept change into your life. In doing so, we will explore how to tap into your flexible strength; the skill it takes to persist in your journey when your actions line up with your values. We will also learn how to re-direct when what you are doing does not bring value to your life.

Who can participate in the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Group for Teens?

  • Youth (ages 15-17) can enroll, whoare experiencing thoughts that mess up their day (thinking about the past or future over and over; sticking to unhelpful judgments and thoughts about yourself) and/or have emotions that are bothersome (worrying; stress; anxiety; hopelessness; sadness)

  • If you are a teenager and you want to learn more about who you are and what is important to you, this group may be of benefit

  • Finding out the feelings and thoughts that can help you live well and take in the things you feel matter to you, rather than spending time and energy on trying to make thoughts and feelings go away, will also be explored in this group

What is the structure of this group?

Youth will attend a 6-week group therapy program led by Armush Salahadin (Psychology Resident) and Graduate Student-Clinicians at the Mary J. WrightChild and Youth Development Clinic (MJWCYDC), supervised by Dr. Colin King (C. Psych, Clinical Director). Each week, information about your thinking and feelings will be explored.
